Blogs, Purpose, audience, media/format /design/content and organization

Purpose, audience and media

Web logs are known as Blogs, they are an on line personal essay or a personal diary. Most blogs are informal, enlightening and might be entertaining depending on the purpose of the blog. Many blogs resemble a newspaper column: providing individual responses to current news, other current issues- everything to favorite recipes, to product evaluations.

Organizations and some business use Blogs to communicate with people who might avoid traditional media or who seek less formal, more personal relationships the successful blogs can build. A Blog- or ever better, a collection of blogs- can help give a human face to an organization or business. A collection of blogs can bring a face and a portfolio of work to a new graduate with the ambition of being writer.

The blog should use wording, terminology and language which the intended audience will clearly understand. The blogger must have an idea and a plan of action as to the purpose of the blog. This blog’s purpose is to showcase the communication skills and writing skills which this blogger has learned, as well as introduce the blogger/writer to future employers, publishers and other authors.

Format/design

Blogs usually have a headline, in large print identifying the topic of the blog. Then below would be smaller sub headings for each post. The design should be inviting, easy to read and easy to navigate for the reader. The design should include colors and backgrounds which are appealing but not too bright or too light. The fonts should be easy to read in both size and color. The other consideration is where you want the tabs to be located and any other links on the home page. The design and format will leave an impression on the reader. If you want to give a professional impression you might not want to use cartoon back grounds, however if you use too plain a design you might not leave an impression of professional creativity.

The blog post can be from a simple paragraph to a whole essay complete with links for resources or references. According to most books, including Strategic Writing by Marsh, Guth & Short, “a blog should be informal. Use the first person pronouns I and we.” (2009) Blogs must be updated frequently, much like a diary, some even daily. Successful blogs usually speak to different aspects of a broad topic, almost anything you say about any aspect of your organization or business or training and skills has the potential of being interesting, In other words create an area of expertise that will keep the readers coming back to your blog.

Blog rarely use internal heading only as an organizational device as most are too short. However an internal headline might be used for comments made by readers posted to the blog. While use of ‘nonstandard grammar” is said by many to be acceptable, in a professional blog such as this one it would not be appropriate, a professional blog should contain proper grammar, spelling, punctuation as to provide a professional atmosphere and prove professional skill sets.

Blogger also should review comments posted and respond as often as possible. There may also be a need to delete any obscene or threatening comments. However responding to those who disagree with your original post is important to keep the dialog going. Blogs are not like some web sites where you post, publish and come back six month later. Blogs should be attended to as often as possible if time allows daily is best. All the while keeping the tone professional even when responding to negative comments posted by readers.

Content and organizations

Blogs also invite written responses, offering the reader to post comments on the post; the reader can post their response or comment on the blog posting easily with a link provided. The writer/ Blogger can also include links for more information or for their sources of information. Blogger should not copy others blogs or article but write their own essay or post.

The blogger should always post affiliations, sponsors and any relationship between themselves and the subject of the blog. It should also be considered by the blogger that blogs are public domain, their employer as well as family and friends have access to the published posts.

Blogs contain multiple chronological posts, reader’s comments generated and posted below the initial postings, thus giving an essay diary design to the blog pages.
